Burnout – What is it

Burnout has become a buzzword. But for many people, it’s a lived reality.

Burnout isn’t just being tired. It’s emotional exhaustion. It’s feeling detached. It’s losing motivation for things you once cared about.

And it’s not a character flaw.

Burnout happens when your nervous system has been in “go mode” for too long.

Signs You Might Be Burned Out

  • You wake up already exhausted

  • You feel cynical or emotionally numb

  • Small tasks feel overwhelming

  • You’re irritable in ways that don’t feel like you

  • Rest doesn’t feel restorative

Many high-achievers are especially vulnerable. You’re capable. Responsible. Reliable. You push through.

Until you can’t.

The Stress Cycle

When stress is chronic and unresolved, your body stays in a heightened state — even if your mind says, “I’m fine.”

Over time, this depletes you.

Burnout is often your body’s way of saying:

“Something has to change.”

Recovery Isn’t Just About Time Off

A vacation might help temporarily, but real recovery involves:

  • Reassessing boundaries

  • Identifying unrealistic expectations

  • Reconnecting with values

  • Learning to regulate your nervous system

Sometimes burnout is about workload.Sometimes it’s about people-pleasing.Sometimes it’s about living out of alignment with your needs.

Therapy can help you untangle that.

Burnout isn’t weakness. It’s a signal.

And when we listen to signals instead of overriding them, healing becomes possible.
